Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Wins Equity of Care Award

In July, the American Hospital Association awarded their second annual Equity of Care Award.  This award recognizes hospitals and healthcare systems that are making significant strides to reduce healthcare disparities in their communities and improve diversity in their leadership ranks.  CulturaLink client, Stephen Jones from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital was honored at the 23rd Annual Leadership Summit this summer.

“It’s a wonderful achievement.  Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital has a proud history of serving the community, and about four years ago we began a journey inside the hospital on diversity and inclusion.  This is a great recognition for a lot of people who did many things that have transformed our organization in a mere four years.”

– Stephen Jones, President & CEO of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital

CulturaLink’s Role in Equity of Care Award

When Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital first started its journey to increase diversity in leadership roles, one of the first steps was to understand their employees’ perceptions surrounding diversity, inclusion, equity and engagement. CulturaLink was chosen to conduct a study of the organization to set a baseline from which to measure progress. The feedback gained through the study, which included staff focus groups, opened their eyes to potential blind spots with regards to the engagement of all employees. The results led to the creation of affinity groups to help close those gaps. The project began by guiding the leadership team on a journey of defining diversity and inclusion for the organization. The outcome was a diversity statement created by the leadership team with CulturaLink’s guidance. Obtaining an understanding of the organizational climate for change led to the development of a 3-year foundational strategy which gave life and clarity to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital’s diversity and inclusion journey.
